Pros and Cons of the Cruise Jobs

Passengers see cruising as a glamorous, romantic experience, but did you ever wonder what it takes to make that holiday come true? Have you ever wondered where does the crew sleep, eat, or what kind of life they lead on a glamorous ship? As cruise jobs are not always as sweet as they may appear, there are some pros and cons of cruise jobs.

Cruise Job Benefits
First of all, it is the travel. The members of the crew generally sign contracts that last between 4 – 12 months during which time they get to see the world for free. Every day there will be a special destination to explore and discover.

Food and board are included. You will have food and shelter for free which means no bills whatsoever while they work on board. You will not worry about electricity, phone, or rent as well as no commuting to get to the workplace. Although a cruise job does not give the greatest salary ever paid one can save significantly with these advantages.

And one more benefit - there are the friends! There are usually at any given time on a cruise ship a great number of different nationalities hailing from Asia to Eastern Europe. And due to the close interaction crewmembers have they get to know different cultures and make lifetime friends. There is hardly a place on earth where someone from Romania will share a room with someone from Australia for a number of months.

Cruise Job Drawbacks
The description of cruise job sounds so ideal that it’s even hard to believe that it does have some disadvantages as well. But there are downsides even to a perfect job.

First of all, a crewmember may have homesickness. You will get homesick more than once during a contract, as the ship life is so compact and different that no matter how good it may be. You will be away from your family and friends for a period of at least four months at a time and it is very hard for some crewmembers, especially those who are married and have kids at home.

Though cruise jobs may seem rather glamorous for those who cruise for a holiday, and they can be. But crew members cope with multiple jobs due to the fact that a ship may have only a limited number of crew and yet all tasks need to be covered. Such jobs take most of their free time, which often doesn’t give them a chance to get off the ship at a port of call.

In addition, crew members have to keep strict rules and regulations that are followed by all cruise lines as per the maritime regulations and one such rule obliges that one third of the crew always should be available onboard in case of an emergency. That is why some crew members are chosen by rotation basis to stay on board every day.

Anyway all jobs have their good and bad parts. And it mostly depends how you look at it. If you think you are cut out for a cruise job, why not give it a try.

Main Mistakes in Finding a Job

First of all, falling for a "no risk" guarantee. Remember that anyone who guarantees that everyone who reads their grossly overpriced information will get a job on a ship is an absurd claim. And they promise to refund your money if you don't get a job. Though you have to send copies of five rejection letters, you won't get them, as no company, cruise line or otherwise, feels any obligation to respond to an unsolicited application.

Do not e-mail cruise lines asking for more info such as job requirements, current openings, etc.

Another mistake is to e-mail your resume or CV to the cruise lines. As it is obvious, they will rather hire someone that took the time to mail a great resume package, but not sent an email.

Do not waste your time on posting your resume online. They don't need to surf the web for candidates, as there are enough people applying directly to the cruise lines.

There is no "official application form". But there are companies offering to buy it. You may also be offered to post an "official application form" online, as no one is surfing the web for a thing that does not exist.

One more mistake is to buy a list of current job openings. Such a list would be impossible to maintain, since most jobs are filled almost as soon as they become vacant.

Do not pay someone to mail your resumes to cruise lines. Your letter will get a lot more attention if it is mailed individually rather than along with a stack of others.

Job Opportunities and Resume Tips Cruise Ship Job Opportunities

You need to know what jobs are actually available on a cruise ship, as different positions have different requirements and different people to apply to. Here is a list of jobs you might enjoy doing: Art Director, Bartender, Casino Staff, Chef, Cruise Director, Dancer, Disc Jockey, Dive Instructor, Fitness Instructor, Food and Beverage Manager, Gift Shop Associate, Group Coordinator, Guest Relations, Internet Café Manager, Massage Therapist, Musician, Photographer, Port and Shopping Lecturer, Shore Excursions Manager, Singer, Social Hostess, Youth Activities Coordinator Purser, Shop Manager, Child Care Staff, Security Staff, Retail Staff and more!

Cruise ship jobs offer you free travel (including airfare to the ship), free room and board, plus starting salaries averaging $1,500 - $2,500 per month. Some lines can offer you to have members of your family travel with you at a lower rate after working there for some time.

As to the accommodations, they are comfortable, and as you will obtain a promotion (to an officer or manager) you will have your own cabin on a higher deck, with a porthole or window.

Spending your off-duty time is completely up to you. You may as the rest of the passengers enjoy hiking around ancient monuments in Greece, eating at a French café in Martinique, walking along a glacier in Greenland, or sunbathing on a sandy beach in Caribbean.

Writing an Application

And now about how to get hired. Do not follow advice as to write a one size type of resume which may fit all cruise lines and cover letter, make about 300 copies of them and send to every cruise line and agency. The chances that you will get any answer are approaching to zero.

As there is a severe competition of 100-1000 applicants for each open position, don’t you think it would be a better idea to send a not standard but specific cover letter and resume, which would not go to the trash within seconds from opening them?

How can you make sure that your application will pass the first cut?

Within the first 3-5 seconds the applications are viewed. If a person in the cruise line’s Human Resources got interested and see what they want to see your application goes on a pile for a second, more detailed review. Otherwise nobody is going to read it again.

Your application should answer 3 questions immediately to survive the screening process. First of all, you should state that you are applying for a specific cruise ship job. You should outline that in what the Professional Association of Resume Writers refers to as “Focus Statement”. Secondly, you have to show that your application is not standard for all the lines. To prove that you should mention at least 2-3 times the name of the cruise line and put it is bold, so during the screening they will notice it. And at last, think about the screener, who is to read more than 100 applications. Make sure your resume is easily read and does not look strange.

Job Descriptions

You need lots of research, time, and the right qualifications to find a job on a cruise ship. Remember that there is a lot of inaccurate information available on the Internet regarding cruise line employment. You should also remember that if your resume, curriculum vitae (CV) or application package is inaccurate, incomplete, poorly written, or goes to the wrong person, you most likely won’t be considered for employment.

First of all you have to choose which job you want. The cruise lines are very particular about the job application process, though there are always vacancies that must be filled. Try to match your skills and interests to a specific job on a ship. But several jobs are often only available to those who have experience working on cruise ships previously.

And here you may read about the most common cruise jobs and their reviews:

Pre-cruise Tips

Identification requirements may differ with every trip. Make sure to be informed exactly what type of I.D. you will need to present before you go.

If you have any special dietary restrictions or requests you should notify the cruise ship of that at least 60 days prior to departure.

Also make sure to leave copies of your passport, airline tickets, traveler's cheques and credit cards with a family member or a friend back at home.

In some countries one should have certain vaccinations to cross the border. You should discuss you travel plans with a doctor. You should also take proof of immunizations with you.

If you suffer from motion sickness, consult your doctor before the departure. You may take motion sickness medications (such as Dramamine and patches) that often do well to restrain nausea.

You may set up a web-based e-mail account prior to departure (such as Hotmail, Yahoo or AOL) and that will make it easier to e-mail friends and family while you're sailing.

Remember call to confirm your flight 24 hours prior to departure.

If you have any constant medical conditions, your doctor should write up a brief medical history for you to take with.

If you receive your cruise documents in the mail, study them thoroughly and confirm that all the information is right.

Remember to check your flight information and airline documents for accuracy for several times.

If you book "cruise only", you should arrive at the port in time for check-in, security and departure.

Life on Board Cruise Ships

Working on a cruise ship is an experience that you never forget. However, before you apply, you must realise that most jobs on cruise liners are very difficult and demanding. There are certain pros and cons which should be considered.

Pros:

  • If you work on a cruise ship, you travel to many attractive destinations and see interesting places. Although you spend most of the time aboard, there are some chances to go ashore and see the sites.
  • You meet people from all over the world and may forge some enduring friendships.
  • You can earn quite a lot of money. Since you do not have many opportunities to spend the money aboard, you can easily save most of it.
  • You get free accommodation and food. Moreover, you don’t have to pay the utility bills.

Cons:

  • It is very difficult to get a job on a cruise liner.
  • You will work long hours – 12 or 14 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Accommodation for the cruise staff is very modest. On newer ships two people or, on older ships, even more share a small cabin and a bathroom. The crew cabins of the major cruise lines have televisions supplied. Most cabins are situated on one of the lower decks and they do not have windows. You have to give up some of your habits and get used to those of your roommates'.
  • You will be at sea in all types of weather. If you suffer from severe sea-sickness, perhaps you should find a job ashore. Light forms of sea-sickness, however, are common amongst experienced seamen.

When you sign the contract with a cruise line company, you will usually pass a course on work safety, first aid and hygiene. You get free medical care in case you get ill on a cruise ship. Your employer - the cruise line - will pay for your health insurance for the period of the contract. This duty is based on the international conventions regarding employment at sea.

Cruise line staff can use the various leisure facilities on most ships, such as the gym, fitness centre, swimming pool, bar and meeting room. These facilities are only for the staff. Most employees do not socialise with the passengers during their free time. They are not allowed to use the facilities for the passengers.

Most cruise liners embark in the USA. You will be probably required to pay the travel expenses from your home to the port yourself. Most cruise line companies want their employees to buy a single way ticket and pay the travel deposit that will be returned to you when the contract is over. However, if you decide to leave before the contract terminates or if you get fired, you will forfeit your deposit. It will be used for purchasing the ticket back to your home country. You will be guarded to the airport to make sure you leave the USA and do not stay there illegally. The deposit is usually from $300 to $500. Some of the largest cruise lines recalled the deposit payments so that the new employees have less expenses (e.g. Carnival Cruise Lines Inc.).

Wages on Cruise Ships

The cruise ship staff is divided into two main groups - tipping personnel and non-tipping personnel.

Tipping personnel

Tipping personnel are the staff with direct contact with the guests who pay them "tips". There are specified amounts of tips per particular positions which are advised to guests prior to embarkation and which vary from one cruise line to another. Such personnel are waiters, busboys /assistant waiters, bar waiters/waitresses, bartenders, cocktail waitresses, etc. Tipping personnel have a small base salary. Most of their earnings are tips. Approximate sample earnings in this group are (in U.S. Dollars per month):

Waiter from $2500 to $4000
Busboy / Assistant Waiter from $1500 to $3000
Bar Waiter / Waitress from $1000 to $2500
Bartender from $1500 to $3000

The applicant must have a good command of English, good work experience and appropriate education to qualify for this group (the latter is not obligatory if the applicant has enough experience).

Non-tipping personnel

Applicants who do not have enough experience or do not have a very good command of English tend to be hired as non-tipping staff. They have a good chance of being promoted to tipping personnel later.

The non-tipping personnel on cruise ships are those who serve the crew, i.e. the lower positions in the passenger area - Staff Waiter/Waitress, Snack Steward, etc. They have fixed salaries without tips and their earnings are from USD 350 to USD 500 per week.
